Portland Fire & Rescue announces interim fire chief

After Chief Ryan Gillespieretires in March, AJ Jackson will take over as interim fire chief for Portland Fire & Rescue.

Jackson, who has been with Portland Fire for more than 25 years, including as a fire marshal, is now the division head for training and medical services at the bureau. Her position as interim chief was announced around one and a half months after Gillespie made his retirement intentions public.

In a statement released by the City of Portland, Jackson said, “I am honored to have this opportunity to lead the members of Portland Fire & Rescue.” I’m excited to help Portland’s neighborhoods and communities by collaborating with the city leadership, Portland Firefighters’ Association Local 43, and fire bureau leadership.

Although they could not immediately provide an anticipated date, city officials stated that they intend to launch a nationwide search for a permanent fire chief in the upcoming months.
