As the tradition demands, NBC’s race coverage starts at 8 a.m. PT, with 33 drivers making their way to the starting grid and vying for position across 200 laps and 500 miles for the privilege to drink a chilled bottle of milk after a first-place finish. Why the milk? When two-time champion Louis Meyer requested a glass of buttermilk following his second victory in the 1930s, the custom was born. Following his third Indianapolis 500 victory in 1936, a dairy industry executive requested that milk be made available to the winner every year after seeing a picture of Meyer consuming buttermilk.
