Last week, Elijah L. Thomas caused a stir in a Multnomah County courtroom when he turned to a distraught family and mouthed the words, “I didn’t do it.”

Thomas, 41, was entering a not guilty plea to second-degree manslaughter in connection with the shooting death of Quincy Gill Sr., 39, on December 11, 2019.
