2 teens accused in murder of Portland man who allegedly tried to stop purse-snatching

According to authorities, two adolescents are in arrest for the suspected murder of a man who attempted to prevent a handbag snatching in a Fred Meyer parking lot on January 13.

The two young males, ages 15 and 16, were detained on murder and robbery charges related to the death of Jonathan Trent, 47, according to officers who declined to identify them.

The 16-year-old is also being charged, according to police, for a string of four robberies that occurred earlier this month. According to police, a third 15-year-old child who is allegedly friends with the other two is charged with a single heist on New Year’s Day.

In Northeast Portland, the county’s juvenile jail is housing the two murder suspects.

According to the authorities, Trent was slain after he attempted to save a woman from being robbed while running a brief errand at the Hazelwood neighborhood grocery shop.

His passing was the first homicide in the city in 2025. Late on Wednesday, news broke of a second murder, this time in the Hazelwood neighborhood.

According to a fundraiser campaign created on Trent’s family’s behalf, Trent was an active participant in the David Douglas Aquatic Club.

According to the page, he was a regular at the pool, encouraging our community and helping (his son) with his optimism and giving nature.
