Portland mayor proposes $28M homeless shelter expansion as city faces mounting budget shortfall

The multi-million dollar cost of Portland Mayor Keith Wilson’s flagship plan to eradicate unsheltered homelessness within a year was revealed on Wednesday.

Wilson estimated that opening four day centers and adding 1,500 overnight-only beds to the city’s network of homeless shelters by December 1 would cost slightly over $28 million. According to city authorities on Wednesday, that expenditure makes up a part of the estimated $100 million shortfall in the city’s budget for the upcoming fiscal year.
