Portland starts Wednesday with frost; cold temps. Sunny skies bring high of 47 by afternoon

Due to below-normal overnight low temperatures in western Oregon, people who are out and about early on Wednesday may be met with widespread frost.

The National Weather Service warns of slippery conditions, particularly in places with shade and exposed metal surfaces. As of around 5:30 a.m., the temperature in several metro areas was 25 degrees or lower. In regions that receive some shade, expect frost to persist until approximately 11 a.m. on Wednesday.

Winds are predicted to intensify during the night, particularly in the vicinity of the Columbia River Gorge. There may be occasional gusts of up to 25 mph in Portland.

Additionally, Thursday will begin with a chilly morning with the possibility of widespread frost. Clouds from an oncoming system will roll in over the day, but the morning will begin clear. About 45 degrees will be the high.

A system moving in from the northeast Pacific will cause a pattern shift in the area late Thursday and early Friday morning. Cloudy skies and stronger winds close to the gorge will have the biggest effect.

On Friday, Portland will experience a combination of sun and clouds with a high temperature of roughly 43 degrees. According to current forecasts, any precipitation is expected to fall in the highlands. Through Saturday morning, there is a 50% probability of fresh snow in the Cascades and a 20% chance of more than a trace of rain in the valleys.
