This Portland midcentury modern for sale at $1,085,000 has Space Age appeal. See inside

The circular driveway is where the cool Space Age charm of a mid-century home for sale in Portland’s Southwest Hills begins. As guests enter the raised glass-walled home, they are greeted by a welcoming portico with an inclined roof.

“When you pull up to this house, you get this elegant feeling,” said listing broker Brian Johnson of Windermere Realty Trust. More surprises await you at the front door and towering portico.

The 2,766-square-foot interior, according to Johnson, evokes a sensation of luxury as well as something almost whimsical and enjoyable.

The one-acre property located at 5540 S.W. Hewett Blvd. is being offered for $1,085,000, and an offer has been accepted.

The house was constructed in 1966 and has traditional midcentury modern features, such as simple, clean lines, windows that rise to vaulted ceilings, and open concept spaces with the fewest interior walls.

A wraparound deck with numerous outdoor lounging and discussion spots and a double-sided wood-burning fireplace between the dining and living rooms add to the Mad Men-era swagger.

According to Johnson, the one-story home, which resembles a grounded jumbo aircraft with wings and is encircled by flora, features large, light-filled rooms and expansive internal passageways that make daily life easy for everyone, from families to retirees. “It’s an entertainer’s delight,” he remarked, adding that the property also appeals to those seeking a place to host guests.

On September 14, Johnson, along with Andrea Young of Windermere Realty Trust, put the property for sale for $1,095,000. According to public records, the price reduced by $10,000 on October 15 and an offer was accepted on December 26.

The gourmet kitchen leads to a room that can be used as a family room or dining area, and it features a sizable eating bar.

The spacious main bedroom features a bathroom with a bathtub adjacent to a shower that is surrounded by glass-block walls, as well as two walk-in closets. Two more bedrooms and baths are available.

There are work and storage spaces in the spacious two-car garage. According to Johnson, an additional space between the kitchen and garage entry can be utilized as an office.
