A duplex in the Multnomah Village district of Southwest Portland was destroyed by fire early on Wednesday morning.
According to a statement from fire officials, Portland Fire & Rescue arrived on the scene at around three in the morning to discover flames already piercing the roof. Commanding officers then requested a second alarm to bring in additional firemen and trucks.
In an email to The Oregonian/OregonLive, Portland Fire Bureau spokesperson Rick Graves stated that 53 firefighters and emergency personnel, together with seven fire engines and three fire trucks, responded to the fire.
There were no reported injuries to the duplex’s occupants or firefighters.
Firefighters were able to safely rescue one elderly occupant from the building shortly after their arrival. According to fire officials, the other occupant of the duplex was on vacation at the time.
Firefighters put out the fire fast, bringing it under control by about 3:40 a.m., but according to fire authorities, they were unable to rescue the building.
According to officials, the Portland Bureau of Emergency Communications, Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue, PGE, and Portland Police all contributed to the firefight.
Investigations are underway to determine the cause of the fire.
