Former Oregon State golfer records best PGA Tour finish by a Beaver in 52 years

At the Sony Open in Honolulu, former Oregon State golfer Paul Peterson tied for 10th Sunday, the best Beaver result in a PGA Tour tournament since 1973.

In his second PGA Tour tournament since being granted a playing card last fall, Peterson finished with a 72-hole total of 12-under 268 after shooting a final round 3-under 67. Nick Taylor, the Sony champion who defeated Nico Echavarria in a two-hole playoff, finished four shots ahead of Peterson.

Since Bob Allard’s seventh-place result at the 1973 B.C. Open, it is thought to be the best finish by a former OSU golfer. Allard, who was a member of the Beavers in the 1960s, participated on the Tour between 1972 and 1976.

The 36-year-old Peterson was a Beaver from 2006 to 2010. Shortly after graduating from Oregon State, Peterson became a professional and has played on worldwide tours for much of his career.

Peterson placed in the top 30 on the 2024 Korn Ferry Tour, earning him a spot on the PGA Tour. At the RSM Classic in Georgia in November, Peterson tied for 25th place.

Near the top of the rankings, Peterson spent the majority of his time in Honolulu. After 36 holes, Peterson was one stroke behind the leader after starting with a 6-under 64 to share the lead in the first round. Peterson managed to go within two strokes of the lead going into the back nine on Sunday, but he was unable to get any closer.

At the Sony Open, Peterson took home $195,025 in earnings.
