Thousands of patients in Oregon, which even in good times has some of the lowest hospital beds per capita in the US, might have their health care services disrupted by a walkout by thousands of frontline medical staff throughout one of the state’s largest health systems.
Beginning at 6 a.m. Friday, almost 5,000 Providence Health & Services frontline healthcare workers are scheduled to leave their jobs. The striking employees are likely to be the largest group of healthcare workers in Oregon history and are mainly nurses from Providence’s eight hospitals throughout the state as well as six women’s clinics.
