Authorities ID man who died in Multnomah County jail

According to court documents, a 46-year-old man who was arrested on a theft charge was the first person to pass away in a Multnomah County jail since July.

According to a statement released by the sheriff’s office on Thursday, Carlos Robert Morris passed away at the Multnomah County Detention Center. Around 12:15 p.m., he was discovered unconscious in his cell, and despite the efforts of paramedics and deputies, he was not able to be revived.

According to court documents, Morris was imprisoned on January 2 on a second-degree theft allegation, which is a misdemeanor, for allegedly stealing nicotine gum valued at $139.98 from a Fred Meyer shop in June.

Since Asia Marie Williams, 31, passed away at the Multnomah County Detention Center on July 25, Morris is the first person to pass away in a Multnomah County jail.

After a record-breaking seven deaths in county jails in 2023, Williams was the only person to pass away in a county jail last year, causing a sharp drop in fatalities.
