According to officials, someone passed away at the Multnomah County Detention Center on Wednesday.
Around 12:15 p.m., deputies discovered an unconscious person in a detention cell, according to a statement from the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office. Despite their best efforts, deputies and paramedics were unable to revive the person.
It may take up to four months for a medical examiner to determine a cause and manner of death, according to the sheriff’s office, and they would not disclose the person’s identity or age until they had notified their next of kin.
Asia Marie Williams, 31, passed away on July 25 two days after being booked, making it the jail’s most recent in-custody death. Compared to the previous year, when seven individuals died in county cells, that was the lone death in either of Multnomah County’s two jails last year.
Multnomah County Sheriff Nicole Morrisey O. Donnell requested outside experts to evaluate conditions and policies and promised to concentrate on avoiding deaths in response to the 2023 mortality wave. Some of those outside specialists came to the conclusion that in order to stop suicides and other deaths in the jails, immediate adjustments were required.
Sheriff Nicole Morrisey O’Donnell told the Multnomah County Board of Commissioners in August that she was answerable to the community. I want to make it apparent that I’m dedicated to finding and putting into practice ways to upgrade our facilities in order to stop fatalities that occur while people are in our care.
