Oregon State hires tight ends, running backs coach to fill out football assistants staff

With the hiring of a new tight ends and running backs coach, Oregon State has swiftly expanded its football coaching staff.

Thomas Ford, who is now the head coach of Idaho, is replaced by Ray Pickering as the Beavers’ running backs coach. After Jon Boyer joined Michigan State’s staff, Will Heck was appointed tight ends coach.

Pickering is from Buffalo, where he spent a season coaching running backs. Heck spent the 2024 season at OSU as an offensive quality control assistant.

Pickering has held high school football coaching roles at Mississippi and NCAA Division II, as well as spells at Texas and Norfolk State. Pickering coached Al-Jay Henderson during his time at Buffalo, where he ran for 1,078 yards and was named to the first team of the MAC.

Heck played football at Linfield, where he spent three years starting at offensive guard and center. Heck was born and raised in Corvallis. Heck spent four years at California as an offensive quality control coach and graduate assistant before last season. He also spent three years at Linfield as an offensive line coach and recruiting coordinator.
