Defender Managing Editor Reflects on Year of Impactful Reporting and Community Service

Happy Christmas! It gives me great pleasure to look back on the year as Managing Editor of the Defender Network. We’ve put in many hours to tell stories that are meaningful to our community—stories written by us, for us, and that speak to our own experiences. Our crew has been at the forefront of presenting news that affects Black communities, from breaking news like the Fort Bend County valedictorian scandal to the pivotal election coverage that determined our future.

It is impossible to exaggerate the significance of the Black press. We are an important voice that raises awareness of our hardships, challenges the status quo, and magnifies our victories. The Black press plays a crucial role in ensuring that our stories are portrayed with honesty, authenticity, and respect in a media landscape that is frequently dominated by mainstream narratives.

I am immensely pleased of the work that the Defender Network does on a daily basis. We are still dedicated to the goal of serving our people, whether that means holding those in positions of authority accountable, offering in-depth reporting, or just entertaining with our Top 5. Knowing that our reporting counts, we honorably carry the flame. I look forward to the future as we keep improving our neighborhood. We appreciate you entrusting us with your voice.

Note: Every piece of content is rigorously reviewed by our team of experienced writers and editors to ensure its accuracy.
