The Illinois State Police (ISP) has been awarded a $10 million grant to address vehicle theft, hijacking, and related violent crimes. This substantial funding, provided by the Illinois Secretary of State’s Illinois Vehicle Hijacking and Motor Vehicle Theft Prevention and Insurance Verification Council, will support ISP efforts through various strategies.
An additional $677,000 grant was also announced in June 2024, bolstering the resources available for these initiatives. ISP Director Brendan F. Kelly emphasized the importance of this funding, highlighting the agency’s comprehensive approach to combating these crimes. The ISP employs increased patrols, air operations support, investigations, and forensic services to effectively tackle vehicle hijackings and thefts.
From April to June 2024, ISP operations have yielded significant results. During this period, the ISP recovered 251 stolen or hijacked vehicles and made 24 arrests for stolen vehicles and three arrests for hijacked vehicles. Additionally, 15 firearms were seized as part of these recovery efforts.
The ISP conducted 58 missions specifically targeting stolen and hijacked vehicles and related violent crimes. K9 units were utilized in 22 instances, and air operations were employed in all 58 missions. The forensic laboratory handled 1,356 assignments related to these cases, underscoring the extensive efforts involved in addressing this issue.
Director Kelly expressed optimism that the grant funding would enable the ISP to allocate additional resources towards apprehending those responsible for vehicle thefts, hijackings, and associated violent crimes. This enhanced focus aims to improve public safety and reduce the prevalence of such crimes across Illinois.
The grants represent a significant investment in the state’s efforts to combat vehicle-related crimes and ensure safer communities for residents. As the ISP continues to implement its multi-pronged strategy, the agency remains committed to leveraging these funds to enhance its capabilities and achieve meaningful results in reducing vehicle theft and hijacking incidents.
