Journalist Message on 2024: Change Remains the only Constant in Education and Politics

As a journalist in Texas, this year has been interesting. Reporting the truth and the facts is crucial in this line of work. However, as they say, reality is more bizarre than fiction.

2024 served as a reminder that the only thing that is consistent in my two beats—politics and education—is change. This indicates that I learned more, improved my abilities, and took more in-depth risks than I had the year before.

Working on the turbulence Houston ISD experienced, including the proposal and defeat of a $4.4 billion bond, was one of the high points of my career. I talked to members of the community whose efforts resulted in this landmark ruling. I visited campuses, went to board meetings and protests, and spoke with parents, teachers, principals, and HISD leaders. Reporting on Texas’ largest school district is a difficult task that requires constant effort. But it’s so fulfilling, guy!

I also started working on a new approach to state and local governance, going to public hearings and city council sessions. This gave me a better understanding of the city’s pulse, what people care about, and what makes them angry. I got to know some amazing folks along the way.

It appears that Houstonians will continue to stand up for what’s right, and as journalists, we need to be there with our notepads in hand to listen. It also implies that we need to hold people in authority responsible.

As you can see, there will be a lot to cover in 2025, and we will be here to do it, with a particular emphasis on the Black community in Houston. We are here to perform the task in the background since it is easy to lose sight of the greater picture in our day-to-day lives. And we’ll keep doing it until 2025!
