For eligible students, Reed College is offering free tuition.
The prestigious liberal arts university, which is a leading source of Fulbright grantees, declared on Thursday that it will not charge tuition to newly enrolled undergraduates from Oregon and Washington as well as transfer students from the United States whose families make less than $100,000 per year.
“This new policy ensures that a college education at Reed remains within the reach of all qualified students, building upon Reed’s longstanding commitment to meet 100% of demonstrated financial need,” the Southeast Portland college noted in its release.
There are over 1,350 undergraduate students enrolled at Reed, and tuition is roughly $70,000 per year. The annual cost rises to $87,000 when housing, board, and fees are included. However, spokesperson Sheena McFarland stated that students who receive tuition waivers might be eligible for free housing and meals.
The number of students the college anticipates enrolling in the program, which it called the Reed Promise, was not specified in its announcement. According to the college, about 29% of students are from the northwest.
