Readers respond: Restoring public trust with no-drama service

It has been a privilege to serve as Oregon’s secretary of state. Although my career has already taken several turns, I never imagined it would lead me to this point.

I knew right away that my goal was to restore confidence in the secretary of state’s office. The greatest approach I could, in my opinion, was to run this organization steadily, without agenda or drama, and to let its employees do what they do best.

I’m pleased with all of our achievements over the past 18 months:

To preserve the Elliott State Forest’s health and value to Oregonians for future generations, the State Land Board approved a forest management plan.

improved our ties with local elections officials and county clerks, enabling safe and orderly elections in spite of a tumultuous political environment.

increased morale at an organization that, long before I came, had been beset by instability and a high rate of leadership turnover.

Without the amazing employees of the agency, none of this would have been possible. They have my sincere gratitude. “You are inheriting an agency of some of the most diligent, compassionate, and hard-working people I’ve ever had the pleasure of knowing,” said Secretary-elect Tobias Read.

To Oregonians: I can attest to the fact that a large portion of your government is committed to the concept of public service. They are here to help, and they do it with love and passion.

What about me? I’m excited to resume my writing profession and spend more time with my family.
