Attorney General Merrick B. Garland will meet with federal, state, and local law enforcement officials in Portland on Friday, along with U.S. Attorney Natalie K. Wight of Oregon.
He will meet privately with the officials but make brief public statements.
Garland, who was sworn in as attorney general in March 2021, is wrapping up his tenure as head of the US Department of Justice at the time of the visit.
Garland cautioned against permitting the politicization of the Justice Department in a September speech to U.S. attorneys. He has condemned assaults by President-elect Donald J. Trump and his supporters on the Justice Department.
During his visit to the Southern District of New York U.S. Attorney’s Office last month, Garland praised the work of the district’s career attorneys, referring to them as the Justice Department’s institutional backbone.
In his August speech to the Major Cities Chiefs Association, Garland also mentioned a violent crime survey that revealed a decrease in crime nationwide during the first half of 2024 when compared to the same time the previous year.
