Police arrest 27-year-old sex offender who allegedly posed as a teenage girl to register for high school in Albany

Last Friday, Albany police announced they had detained a convicted sex offender who was attempting to register as a high school student.

According to a statement from the Albany Police Department, Makayla Craig, 27, is charged with computer crimes, second-degree forgery, and false swearing for pretending to be a 15-year-old girl in order to enroll as a high school student.

Craig was reported by staff at the Greater Albany Public School District’s health and social support program, Families and Communities Together, when they noticed that Craig seemed to be an adult, according to the police.

After conducting an investigation, police found the purported fraud and took Craig into custody.

Craig, whose real name is Alec Ray Craig, was previously found guilty of second-degree theft in 2019, third-degree sexual abuse in 2023, and unauthorized use of a vehicle in 2024.
