Chicago (AP) — Chicago Cubs reliever Colten Brewer’s frustration boiled over during Saturday’s game against the Los Angeles Angels, leading to an incident that significantly worsened his weekend. After being pulled in the third inning, Brewer punched a dugout wall, resulting in a fractured left hand. This injury led to his placement on the 60-day injured list before Sunday’s series finale.
Brewer expressed regret over the incident, acknowledging that his emotions got the better of him, and stated he had no intention of causing self-harm. The altercation occurred after Brewer relieved starter Kyle Hendricks, who exited with back tightness and the Cubs trailing 2-0. Brewer’s short stint on the mound saw him give up three runs—one earned—hit a batter, and commit a throwing error in just two-thirds of an inning. The Cubs eventually lost 7-0.
Chicago manager Craig Counsell addressed the situation, recognizing the mistake but emphasizing that it was out of character for Brewer. He remarked that such actions are a clear acknowledgment of an error.
Brewer is not the first pitcher this season to land on the injured list due to punching a wall. Texas Rangers reliever Brock Burke similarly injured his non-throwing hand earlier this year, and in 2022, Astros reliever Phil Maton missed the postseason after breaking his right pinkie in frustration.

Brewer has participated in 16 games for the Cubs this season, recording a 5.66 ERA with no decisions. In a corresponding roster move, Chicago called up right-hander Hunter Bigge from Triple-A Iowa. Bigge has posted a 1-0 record with a 1.32 ERA and six saves in 11 games with Iowa.
