The Oregonian/OregonLive examined last week what Portland Interscholastic League girls’ basketball would look like in 2024–2025.
It’s time to quickly review the league’s best players.
Junior Samarah Massey, Benson
In both of the previous seasons, Massey played a significant role in the Astros’ competitive teams. She’s suddenly the team’s veteran, while being one of the oldest players. The guard’s outstanding finishing skills and defensive perseverance have allowed her to carve out a pleasant place for herself. As a sophomore, she was selected to the all-league second team.
Benson sophomore Londyn Dyton
Another guard, Dyton, is moving up the state ranks. Coach Precious Alex says she brings incredible defensive intensity, and the staff is eager to see what kind of impact she can have for the Astros on that end.
Freshman Jayla Lackey, Benson
According to Alex, every student in the program has made an early impression and will keep doing so. A 6-foot-1 post like Lackey might be the best of the lot. Alex stated that she will be thrilling to watch this year as she follows in the footsteps of the graduated Mahogany Chandler-Roberts, and she is already attracting Division I interest.
Senior Bijou O. Connor of Cleveland
O’Connor is the only senior on the team and the only returning starter for the Warriors. She is one of the city’s top defensive guards and a spectacular offensive player, particularly in transition, according to coach Poeko Waiwaiole.
Charlotte Gardner, Cleveland, junior
Cleveland’s inexperience means the Warriors will be searching for fresh contributions from all areas. Gardner, who gained a lot of varsity experience the previous season, is a great candidate to advance. She had outstanding shooting and decision-making skills, according to Waiwaiole.
Senior Hazel Allen, Franklin
One of the few players who returns to the Lightning program with familiarity and experience is Allen, a wing/guard who will have a lot on her plate in 2023–2024.

Franklin and Kate Reed, junior
The only player from the Lightning who made the all-league teams the previous season graduated. Another great choice to help close that gap is Reed. She has program experience and has developed into a leader here as a junior, just like Allen.
Franklin freshman Ava Nguyen
Nguyen has already made enough of an impression on Franklin’s staff that she is expected to play a strong point guard role. Her strength is shooting outside, which will help her get used to the high school game sooner.
Senior Karina Franco, Grant
Last season, Franco was the Generals’ top scorer and rebounder. As a junior, the wing made the all-league second team. According to coach Mary Beth-Snell, Karina is a wing who can guard the post and wing, handle the ball, and shoot.
Senior Ana Sherlag, Grant
According to Beth-Snell, Sherlag frequently defends post players, has a good basketball IQ, and alternates between the wing and forward positions. She is one of the five returning starters for the Generals and was named an honorable mention all-league player the previous season.
Charlotte Wilson, Grant, sophomore
The team’s main ball handler going into the season is Wilson, a sophomore guard who started the previous year. According to Beth-Snell, she is a powerful defensive player who also has a terrific sense of the game and propels our offense.
Lincoln and Siri Lindsey, junior
Coach Brent Reed stated that Lindsey sets the tone for the Cardinals. The junior makes all of Lincoln’s hustle plays and is a superb defender with outside shooting ability.
Lincoln’s Evie Littrell, senior
Despite his youth this season, Lincoln’s outstanding team speed and outside shooting skills are the first signs of hope for the future. According to Reed, Littrell possesses both and is particularly notable for her perimeter shooting.
Lincoln sophomore Hannah Greene
One of the Cardinals’ rising stars is winger Greene. According to Reed, she can do a little bit of everything offensively and offers a lengthy frame. Reed, who has a brand-new staff this season, has big hopes for the sophomore.
Senior Abrianna Lawrence, Jefferson
Lawrence has developed into one of Class 6A’s top guards and is a leader for the Lady Democrats. For a squad that values wreaking havoc on that side of the ball, her speed and finishing prowess make her a terrible opponent, and her defensive attitude is infectious. Last season, she led Jefferson in assists and was named to the all-league first team.
Senior Chauncey Andersen, Jefferson
Andersen is one of the best scorers in the state. She isn’t scared to take it right into the middle of opposing defenses because of its great size and tight handling, which allow her to convert in a variety of ways. As a junior, she was the team’s top scorer and was selected to the all-league first team alongside Lawrence.
Senior Leila Nunez, Jefferson
Nunez is the team’s interior presence and another essential part of the Lady Democrats’ outstanding junior class. Using her stature to cause matchup problems on both sides of the floor, she led the team in rebounds the previous season. The forward for the all-league first team can step out and make three-pointers offensively.
Senior Autumn Hart of Wells
Hart, who can play all five positions and was an all-league second team wing the previous season, is a fascinating addition to the Guardians. She can handle the ball, score in a variety of ways, and play excellent defense, according to coach Glen Coblens.
Claire Dixon, Wells, senior
Although Wells finished in the middle of the pack in the PIL the previous season, there is hope that they will continue to climb this winter given the changes at the top. As the team’s floor general, Dixon will be essential to that possible surge. Coblens claimed that over the previous season, her shooting has improved.
Senior McKenna Reed of Wells
The team’s best post player is Reed. She may use her jump shot to harm defenses when attacking. She has, however, shown herself to be one of the program’s most capable defenders, according to Coblens.
