The Oregon Department of Justice said in a press release Monday that Camping World, an RV dealer with several locations in Oregon, will pay the state $3.5 million in a settlement agreement, with $3 million going to consumers who overpaid for recreational vehicles in 2017 and 2018.
Attorney General Ellen Rosenblum stated in the press announcement, “Our investigation revealed that Camping World would advertise a heavily discounted Dare to Compare price.” In order to recoup its alleged savings, Camping World would double-charge customers for prep and freight costs that were already covered by the advertised price during negotiations.
The Oregon Department of Justice Civil Recovery Section said in the release that the settlement marks the conclusion of a multi-year consumer protection investigation.
The DOJ said the $3 million will be used to reimburse people who paid more than the advertised price for an RV they bought from Camping World between January 1, 2017, and December 31, 2018.
Refunds may also be available to those who purchased a car after December 31, 2018, but they must file a written complaint with the Oregon DOJ within six months of this notice, according to the DOJ.
According to the press release, customers who file written complaints should include any supporting documentation that shows they paid more than the listed amount.
According to the DOJ, Camping World is not allowed to charge more than the vehicle’s listed price going forward. All customers must be able to purchase it at that price, and it cannot be dependent on the method of payment the buyer chooses.
