The Oregonian/OregonLive’s editorial, “A stunning resignation and a wake-up call for OHSU,” on the Sunday Opinion cover raised important questions about OHSU leadership, which was excellent to read. I was disappointed to hear that Brian Druker, the CEO of the Knight Cancer Institute, had resigned, claiming that OHSU had lost sight of its purpose and was no longer a place to conduct innovative research. But his choice and The Oregonian/OregonLive’s increased attention seem to have come at the wrong time.
Under former President Danny Jacobs, OHSU’s culture quickly shifted from one that was dedicated to healing, educating, and discovery to one that was filled with misinformation and fear. In 2023, the OHSU board gave Jacobs large bonuses and extended his contract in spite of considerable objections from the School of Medicine department heads and no public debate. In addition to receiving minimal media coverage, Jacobs’ unwarranted firing of medical school Dean David Jacoby last winter caused significant confusion and ire among faculty and staff.
Everyone sensed the need to move on from Jacobs’ dismal administration, as seen by the OHSU Board’s swift action to replace him after he resigned last month. Jacobs’ resignation might have been accelerated by a forceful message from a reputable leader like Druker (or from The Oregonian/OregonLive) early last winter.
Although it will take time for OHSU to bounce back, I am certain that Steve Stadum, as interim president, has the background, outlook, and vision to guide us. In order to repair the damage caused by Jacobs and advance our community, he requires and merits our assistance. Oregon depends too much on OHSU to collapse. Please continue reporting.
