Oregon football outside linebacker Matayo Uiagalelei a finalist for Polynesian college football player of the year

One of the finalists for the Polynesian college football player of the year honor is Oregon’s Matayo Uiagalelei.

The Polynesian Football Hall of Fame revealed on Wednesday that the Ducks outside linebacker is one of six candidates for the award, which is given yearly to the most exceptional college football player of Polynesian heritage who exemplifies exceptional skill and integrity.

The other contenders were Ohio State defensive lineman J.T. Tuimoloau, Tennessee quarterback Nico Iamaleava, Arizona wide receiver Tetairoa McMillan, Utah offensive lineman Spencer Fano, and Arizona State offensive lineman Leif Fautanu.

As a sophomore, Uiagalelei had a Big Ten-high 10.5 sacks, 37 tackles (12.5 for loss), two forced fumbles, an interception, and a blocked kick.

He is the first finalist since Noah Sewell (2021, 2022) and the sixth in the program’s history. DeForest Buckner was a finalist in 2015, Penei Sewell won in 2019, and Marcus Mariota took home the prize in 2014.

The award will be given to the winner on January 18, 2025, after the winner is revealed on December 19.
