Chair Tootie Smith’s spontaneous suggestion during the Dec. 5 Clackamas County Board of Commissioners meeting that ineffective Commissioner Mark Shull cause a constitutional crisis for the state by refusing to resign after being voted out in favor of new Commissioner Melissa Fireside really stood out to me.
I can see your frustration with Fireside (the Oregon Department of Justice is reviewing the investigation of incoming Clackamas County Commissioner Melissa Fireside, Dec. 3). I voted for her because, as a constituent, I find it difficult to wait patiently to find out what’s actually happening, and I wish she would make a statement to reassure me. I didn’t simply vote for her, though. I did not vote for Shull. I saw someone who opposed a lot of my ideals after watching and hearing his remarks during his reign. Despite the fact that the rubberized playground surfacing at the new Concord Park was designed to be long-lasting, cushion falls, and accommodate people in wheelchairs or strollers, he mocked the expensive cost. Shortly after applauding the passage of a bill that would have aided impoverished undocumented immigrant families, he placed responsibility for addressing the issue of school absence on parents.
He likened the Holocaust to the use of masks and other COVID-19 methods. Additionally, he oversaw the county’s diversity office’s destruction. My vote made it clear that I don’t want Shull to represent me. Please honor my vote as well as the votes of the other voters who did not support him. To handle this, we have a legal procedure. Urge the newly appointed commissioner to resign and call for a new election. Let’s set a good example.
