A pair of googly eyes is one of the unique sculptures on numerous of Bend’s roundabouts that you may see as you travel throughout the city.
The large plastic objects have been positioned on eight public art pieces by one or more people, seemingly in an effort to elicit some amusement. However, officials separately stated that the removal of the statues has cost the city $1,500 and posted on Instagram that the act could damage them.
Social media users’ reactions to the message are diverse, with many expressing their approval in ALL CAPS.
According to one commenter, these gadgets withstand daily temperature fluctuations and all kinds of weather. A small amount of adhesive won’t harm it.
“These adorable eyes give me the hope to move forward each day,” said another reviewer.
The sculptures may need to be repainted or recoated since the glue from the eyeballs can harm metal coatings, according to city spokesperson Ren Mitchell. Blue-green corrosion may result from ruined wax on the bronze statues.
According to Mitchell’s email, corten steel requires chemical treatment to rust uniformly since adhesives can cause it to lose rust spots. Strong solvents are needed to remove adhesive residue from stainless steel.
The nonprofit organization Art in Public Places commissioned and donated more than 20 sculptures for Bend’s city roundabouts. When it comes to wreaths, leis, and Santa hats, city officials turn a blind eye to the fact that people occasionally adorn the artwork for various holidays.
In an attempt to brighten up passengers, Boston transport officials adopted googly eyes earlier this year, or at least sticker copies of them, and attached them to a few T trains. Officials back in Bend say they want the ploy to stop. However, they are not yet pursuing the police. For the time being, they want to inform people about the unexpected implications of the gag.

According to Mitchell, adding googly eyes may be humorous and make people laugh, but in the end, it causes unintended harm.
