Eugene Earlier this season, Oregon was led to the Rose Bowl by Dan Lanning, but it was for a night game against a UCLA club that was rebuilding, not for the Granddaddy of Them All.
On January 1, Lanning and the top-seeded Ducks will make their way back to Pasadena as the top seed in the College Football Playoff. After winning the Big Ten Championship on Saturday night, Oregon’s next postseason destination was confirmed Sunday afternoon when the 12-team field was finalized.
“We are extremely excited to participate in this game,” Lanning stated. This is a game you dream of coaching in when you’re on this side of the nation. The game in question is one of the ones that I have yet to complete. For me, it’s definitely an excitement.
Phil Knight, who is obviously a huge supporter of our program and a major impact on it, has always told me that his top priority is getting us to the Rose Bowl. The Granddaddy of Them All is a historic game, and I’m thrilled that our team gets to play in it. We will enjoy this one, and I have no doubt that our guys are eager to get ready to take the field.

On December 21 (5 p.m. PT, ESPN), Oregon will play the winner of the matchup between No. 8 seed Ohio State and No. 9 seed Tennessee in Columbus, Ohio. With the possible exception of the Rose Bowl if the Buckeyes defeat the Volunteers to face the Ducks again, the CFP selection committee created a bracket that avoids conference or regular season rematches in the four first-round games and in three of the four quarterfinals.
When questioned about less than ideal scheduling conditions, Lanning took a positive position on Oregon’s draw, as he has done throughout the season.
“What a chance for us,” Lanning remarked. Being given the chance to play in the Rose Bowl excites me. Regardless of the ultimate objective, I believe you will have the opportunity to play some incredible teams. The opportunity to play against excellent competition excites me. That is the purpose of playoff moments.
