Readers respond: Compromise needed for affordable programs

A complicated issue can occasionally be simplified, but not always. Putting things in a nutshell is the term for it. In his recent opinion piece, “Why DOGE is an essential and important idea,” Fareed Zakaria, a columnist for the Washington Post, provided an illustration of how the American economy and culture came to be where they are now.

“We are where we are because the American public voted for Democratic levels of spending and Republican levels of taxation, which leaves a gap that can only be filled by borrowing,” says Zakaria. That loan has enormous interest payments that increase annually. They cannot be sustained on their own, let alone repay the principal.

Together, the two political parties in power in this nation must enact policies and initiatives that are both necessary and reasonably priced. They also need to put in place the tools necessary for those laws and programs to be implemented and enforced effectively and efficiently. That requires compromise, which is difficult but vital to the survival of our government and the benefit of our citizens.
