The Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office reports that an Oregon Army National Guard helicopter unexpectedly rescued a person Wednesday afternoon after a plane crashed southeast of Molalla.
A rented single-engine Cessna crashed close to Trout Creek and the North Fork of the Molalla River at 2:27 p.m., prompting deputies to arrive.
When the pilot was flying from Washington County to Bend, he reported an engine issue. The pilot safely landed the aircraft within minutes of the technical problem after spotting a gravel road below, according to a statement from sheriff’s officials.
Sheriff’s officials reported that despite the plane being damaged, the pilot and passenger were unharmed. Neither name was released.
When the crew of an Oregon Army National Guard HH-60M Black Hawk helicopter heard the plane’s distress call over the radio, they were in the vicinity on a planned training operation. They found the downed plane, touched down there, and transported the two to Mulino Airport.
While other deputies secured and recorded the crash site, deputies met the pilot and passenger at the airport to collect information.
In an Instagram post with the caption, “Talk about being in the right place at the right time to assist,” the National Guard brought attention to the occurrence.
Sheriff’s officials stated that the rental business is making arrangements for the Cessna’s retrieval while the Federal Aviation Administration is looking into the disaster.
