Readers respond: Biden doesn’t deserve criticism for son’s pardon

I find it unbelievable that President Joe Biden has been criticized from every angle for pardoning his son Hunter Biden for the crimes for which the son was found guilty as well as for any other crimes that occurred during a specific period of time (Biden pardons his son Hunter despite previous promises that he would not do so, Dec.1). The president did, in fact, violate his frequently stated vow to not pardon his son. But at the time, Joe Biden surely believed that Donald Trump could never win the presidency again.

Trump has pledged to target his political rivals with the Department of Justice. He has appointed unfit friends to departmental top positions. And almost ever are the offenses proven against Hunter Biden prosecuted. These elements likely led President Biden to believe that Trump would unfairly single out his son and persecute him in the future. Hunter would have been vulnerable to years of unjustified harassment if the pardon had been granted.
