Located in the back area of the M&M Marketplace in Hillsboro, the Annual Tamalesllen Festival filled the air with sweet and savory scents while the restaurants showcased their authentic tamales, offering a variety of savory and spicy meat dishes as well as sweet options like pi an elote and pi an elote. While a panel of judges assessed the participants in the sabor function, docenas of attendees offered bocados and cast their votes for their preferred versions while placing frijoles in frames. Established by Jaime Miranda to honor local cuisine, the event has grown to become a significant fundraiser for the Hillsboro Foundation for Escuelas, raising over $8,000 through the sale of tamales.
The competitive Hillsboro tamal scene is a good indicator of the rich cultural heritage of the state of Washington. However, Hillsboro is not the only place to have delicious and fresco tamales.
“The demand for tamales is increasing,” Miranda said. The people are adopting them. In the area, I saw a lot more restaurants that served tamales and a lot more loncheras de comida.
The autopista Tualatin Valley (U Oregon 8) stretches from Beaverton to Cornelius, passing through some of the more diverse neighborhoods in the Portland metropolitan area. We took a tour along this route, following the route of some of our favorite tamales.
Here is only a small example of where one might find tamales sabrosos along and around the same path.

Reaching La Chabelita
There is a huge store in the back of this small local market that has all the ingredients you need to satisfy your craving for authentic Mexican food. We have the elote tamal, relleno de masa y maz dulce, along with queso and crema. Our recommendation is to not break these essential complements.
Visit La Chabelita: 13375 S.W. Henry St., Beaverton; lachabelita.com; 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Camila’s Mexican Cuisine
A distinct black food lonchera adorned with multicolored flowers can be found in front of the Manila Market’s Aloha location. Another notable restaurant in the tamal autopista is Camila’s Mexican Food, which serves a variety of traditional tamales from their kitchen, such as pollo with green salsa and rajas with queso. Additionally, we had a pi a tamal dulce during our visit. Some sabores are developed in rotation, therefore it is fair to ask by the current time in order to fulfill the request.
Camila’s Mexican Food is open every day from 10 a.m. to 19:30 p.m. at 3645 S.W. Elliott Place, Beaverton; its Instagram handle is @camilas.mexicanfooden.
Pupuseria Delicias
Delicias Pupuseria, which serves El Salvadorian-style tamales, offers a unique variety of CL sicos, including a variety we can’t find anywhere else: chipil n. These traditional salvador tamales are frijole-filled and encased in masa mixed with chipil, a green pltano fruit that originated in Mexico and Central America. The combination adds a distinctive flavor that is comparable to that of the spinacas. The men also include elote and pollo tamales.
Delicias Pupuseria: 3460 S.W. 185th Ave., Suite A, Aloha, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Mondays to Sundays and from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sundays; Delicias Pupuseria on Facebook.
The Tamal Express
Tamal Express is a local favorite for enjoying fresco tamales, located at least a kilometer and a half to the east of Delicias Pupuseria. Located in the Aloha Food Carts area, this family-friendly restaurant specializes in a variety of tamales, such as green ones with pollo (pollo with salsa verde), red ones with puerco (cerdo with salsa roja), cheese with jalape o (queso with jalape os), and pi a de dulce (pi a dulce). If you want something unique, try the dulce pi tamal, which is relleno de coco y pasas and encased in rosa brillante masa, naturally colored with trituradas.
Tamal Express: 20001 S.W. Tualatin Valley Hwy., Aloha; @tamalexpressllcen Instagram; 6:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Mondays and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sundays.
The Market in Yesenia
After leaving Aloha and arriving in Hillsboro, I discovered that this meat market and marketplace is the perfect place to buy tamales. They serve freshly made tamales in a variety of flavors, such as elote tamales, pollo with salsa verde, rajas with queso, and puerco with salsa roja. Customers may come in to make purchases or browse the store in search of tamale bolsas in specified quantities to be delivered to their homes.
Yesenia’s Market is located at 1075 S.E. Baseline St., Hillsboro, and is open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.
The M&M Marketplace
Obviously, we must not overlook the site of the Tamales Annual Festival. M&M Marketplace is a hub for Latino business owners in Hillsboro. You can find stores inside that sell everything from cuero paintings to frescoes and fruit vases. This competition involves showcasing the products of nine different manufacturers with varying tastes and styles. You may find almost every relleno on the market, such as the ste an o tamales: the cerdo salvadore os tamales. The winners, who were chosen with the first place in both the People’s and the Judiciary’s elections, were the Pupuseria Gladis’s tamales.
M&M Marketplace, located at 346 S.W. Walnut St., Hillsboro, is open from 2 to 8 p.m. on Fridays and from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturdays.
Aguilar Pollos
Throughout the months, this lonchera, which specializes in brasas and pollos, offers tamales to its men. Among the options are vegetarian versions with rajas and queso and pollo tamales with either red or green salsa.
Pollos Aguilar: 3146 E. Baseline St., Cornelius; grilledchickencornelius.com; 11:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.
