4 NFL head coaching vacancies remain after Jets hire Glenn

Ben Johnson and Aaron Glenn are both moving up to head coaching.

According to someone with knowledge of the situation, Glenn consented to take over the New York Jets on Wednesday. Since the team had not yet made the hiring announcement, the individual talked to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.

Four head coaching positions are open as Glenn is moving to New York, Johnson is going to Chicago, and Mike Vrabel is already in New England.

Cowboys, Raiders, Jaguars, and Saints are still in the running.

Two days after the No. 1 seeded Lions’ defeat by Washington, Johnson, the offensive coordinator for Detroit, selected the Bears on Monday.

After serving as defensive coordinator for Detroit, Glenn decided to rejoin the Jets, where he began playing in 1994 and went on to win a Pro Bowl as a cornerback.

An overview of each team’s search is provided below:

Dallas Cowboys

Since Mike McCarthy was fired, Deion Sanders and owner Jerry Jones have discussed the role, but they haven’t had a formal conversation. Jason Witten, an 11-time Pro Bowl tight end who spent 16 of his 17 seasons in Dallas, was suggested as a potential candidate but hasn’t been given an interview either.

Kellen Moore, who played for the Eagles before spending four seasons as Dak Prescott’s play-caller, was questioned by the Cowboys. Dallas also spoke with former Vikings coach Leslie Frazier and former Jets coach Robert Saleh.

An individual with firsthand knowledge of the strategy told The Associated Press that the Cowboys conducted an interview with their offensive coordinator, Brian Schottenheimer, on Tuesday.

Since Jones bought the team in 1989 and sacked the renowned Tom Landry, who led the Cowboys for 29 years from the franchise’s founding, this will be his ninth head coach.

Jimmy Johnson was hired by Jones from Miami, and the two of them won two Super Bowls. The team Johnson put together won the team’s most recent Super Bowl 29 years ago, and he brought in former Oklahoma coach Barry Switzer six years after he had left the position.

Wade Phillips, McCarthy, and Bill Parcells were among the next six coaches who had held head coaching positions in the NFL. The coordinators were Jason Garrett, Dave Campo, and Chan Gailey.

Las Vegas Raiders

After just one season, general manager Tom Telesco and Antonio Pierce were sacked, giving new minority owner Tom Brady significant influence over the team’s course.

On Wednesday, Las Vegas decided to choose John Spytek as their new general manager. From 2020 to 2022, Spytek served as Tampa Bay’s deputy general manager while Brady was a player there. At Michigan, the two were teammates as well.

Johnson and Glenn, former Seattle Seahawks and USC coach Pete Carroll, Broncos defensive coordinator Vance Joseph, Ravens offensive coordinator Todd Monken, Saleh, and Kansas City defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo have all been asked to be interviewed by the Raiders.

Jacksonville Jaguars

Shortly after Buccaneers offensive coordinator Liam Coen chose to remain with the organization rather than accept a second interview in Jacksonville, the Jaguars sacked general manager Trent Baalke on Wednesday.

This week, second interviews are anticipated for Saleh and Raiders defensive coordinator Patrick Graham. The Ravens’ Todd Monken, the Bills’ Joe Brady, Johnson, Glenn, Spagnuolo, and Moore have already been interviewed by the Jaguars.

The Jaguars finished 4-13 and went back to the coach market following two successful seasons under Doug Pederson and a postseason victory.

New Orleans Saints

Dolphins DC The Saints are scheduling follow-up interviews with Giants offensive coordinator Mike Kafka and Anthony Weaver.

Along with Joe Brady, Moore, and former Stanford coach David Shaw, other candidates who have already been questioned include interim coach Darren Rizzi, who went 3-5 after Dennis Allen was fired.

Although he is waiting until the end of the season, Commanders OC Kliff Kingsbury is on the team’s list. McCarthy is also a target for the Saints.
