Bubba Wallace and 23XI Racing wrapped up the Chicago Street Course event with a respectable 13th-place finish, but their performance was overshadowed by a dramatic post-race incident involving race winner Alex Bowman. After the checkered flag, Wallace’s car made contact with Bowman’s, sending the No. 48 vehicle into the wall. NASCAR promptly reviewed the incident and imposed a significant $50,000 fine on Wallace for his role in the collision.
Responding to the penalty, Steve Lauletta, president of 23XI Racing, took to social media to express the team’s stance, indicating reluctance to appeal the decision due to challenges in maintaining consistency with NASCAR’s judgment calls.
“It’s unfortunately difficult to ensure full consistency with these judgment calls. We’re focused on moving forward to Pocono,” Lauletta stated, underscoring the team’s intent to redirect their focus towards upcoming races.
Despite the incident, NASCAR opted not to dock Wallace and 23XI Racing points, a silver lining as Wallace continues to battle just outside the playoff bubble. With only six races remaining in the regular season, Wallace faces a crucial period to regain momentum and secure a spot in the highly anticipated 2024 NASCAR playoffs.
