2 men killed in separate fatal shootings at same NE Portland motel; no arrests announced in either slaying

This Wednesday morning’s deadly shooting is the second at a motel in Northeast Portland in as many weeks.

Separate gunshots in the Quality Inn motel parking lot close to the 8200 block of Northeast Sandy Boulevard have claimed the lives of two men. Police taped up the motel’s entrances on Wednesday, and a mobile command center and other police cars were present in the parking area.

According to police spokesperson Mike Benner, when North Precinct officers arrived to the parking lot just after five in the morning, they discovered a man dead. According to police, the suspect or suspects ran away before they could be apprehended.

For the past three years, James Thomas, 64, has resided in a house on Northeast 82nd Avenue, right across from the Quality Inn. Around 5:20 a.m., he claimed to have heard gunfire and witnessed the arrival of police. By 11:40 a.m., the police had departed the area.

When police arrived at the same motel just after 7 a.m. on Nov. 20, they discovered a man who had been shot. After being transported by EMS to a hospital, he passed away. He was identified by police on Wednesday as Kimo Henriques, 43, who is from Vancouver, Washington.

Police contacted the Crisis Negotiation Team and Special Emergency Reaction Team to search the area for potential suspects in the initial shooting. Police have not reported any arrests in either shooting, however they did say that one person was taken into custody following the search.

Thomas stated that in order to monitor any unusual behavior near their residences, he and his neighbor across the street periodically check in with one another. Despite being upset by the shootings, he expressed gratitude that the violence in the area hasn’t spread to his side of the street.

“It’s awful,” Thomas remarked.
