16 dead, 16 missing as fire crews try to corral Los Angeles blazes before winds return this week

Los Angeles As forecasters once again warned of dangerous weather with the return of strong winds this week, firefighters rushed Sunday to make more headway against wildfires that have destroyed hundreds of houses and killed 16 people in the Los Angeles area. Authorities reported that at least 16 persons were still unaccounted for, and that figure was certain to increase.

With persistent winds of 50 mph and gusts in the mountains up to 70 mph, the National Weather Service issued red flag warnings for dangerous fire conditions through Wednesday. Rich Thompson, a weather service meteorologist, stated that Tuesday will be the most hazardous day.
