As costs increase due to an avian flu outbreak, Pennsylvania State Police reported that 100,000 eggs were stolen Saturday from an organic source in Franklin County.
According to state police, the eggs were taken from the rear of a distribution trailer at the Pete & Gerry’s Organics facility on Commerce Avenue in Antrim Township at approximately 8:40 p.m.
The value of the eggs is approximately $40,000. Anyone with information is urged by state police to contact the Chambersburg barracks at 717-264-5161.
Due to a recent flu outbreak that has caused a shortage of eggs, the cost of a dozen big eggs in the US has increased 36.8% since last year, according to the Consumer Price Index.
Depending on the brand and kind, a dozen are being sold for $4.69 and higher in grocery shops throughout central Pennsylvania. Some establishments have inconsistent inventory, and signs alert customers about possible shortages.
The H5N1 virus is the cause of avian influenza. The USDA estimates that the current outbreak, which began in 2022, has killed almost 136 million birds.As of this writing, Pennsylvania has no live instances among poultry.
